Carnival of Viareggio

Every year, when winter begins to lose its chill and the sea air carries a festive breeze, the Viareggio Carnival returns to brighten the Tuscan coast with a unique spectacle made of creativity, satire, music and popular participation. Born in the second half of the nineteenth century, the Viareggio Carnival has grown to become one of Italy’s most iconic and beloved events.

What makes this celebration so special is its popular spirit: papier-mâché parade floats, masks, satire and entire communities coming to life.

Floats and satire in motion

The undisputed protagonists of this celebration are the parade floats: gigantic papier-mâché sculptures, several meters tall, created by local artists. The technique was perfected in Viareggio in the 1920s and makes it possible to build very large yet lightweight structures capable of moving and coming to life.

The themes of these creations are often satirical: politicians, celebrities, and current events. The Viareggio Carnival uses humor and exaggeration to entertain while prompting reflection.

When and how it takes place

The Carnival is held every year between February and March. The main parade days include several Saturdays, Sundays, Fat Thursday and Mardi Gras.

For 2026, the official dates are:

  • Sunday, 1st February 2026 at 3 PM

  • Saturday, 7th February 2026 at 5 PM

  • Thursday, 12th February 2026 at 5 PM

  • Sunday, 15th February 2026 at 3 PM

  • Tuesday, 17th February 2026 at 3 PM

  • Saturday, 21st February 2026 at 5 PM

The parades take place along Viareggio’s seafront, following a loop that runs through the seaside boulevards.

Behind the scenes: art, craftsmanship, and community

Creating the floats is no small task: inside the hangars of the Carnival Citadel, artists work for months, shaping wooden, iron and papier-mâché structures, painting, sewing costumes and preparing choreography. It is a team effort involving dozens of float makers and performers to offer the public a spectacle that is at once celebration and cultural heritage.
